AFI 100 Years 100 Movies

In 1998 AFI compiled their first ever list of the 100 greatest movies of all time. I have no idea what the criteria was. I get the sense that AFI is not much into comedies as the highest ranking one back then was "Some Like it Hot" placing 14 on the list.

It seems like 10 years later things haven't changed. The highest ranking comedy in this more recent version was again "Some Like it Hot" but now down 8 places to 22. Perhaps they take movies a bit too seriously.

Anyways here's you're top 10.

1 CITIZEN KANE (1941)
2 GODFATHER, THE (1972)
3 CASABLANCA (1942)
4 RAGING BULL (1980)
5 SINGIN' IN THE RAIN (1952)
6 GONE WITH THE WIND (1939)
7 LAWRENCE OF ARABIA (1962)
8 SCHINDLER'S LIST (1993)
9 VERTIGO (1958)
10 WIZARD OF OZ, THE (1939)

Interesting notes:
- Movie that made the biggest jump - The Searchers up 84 places
- Movie that had the biggest drop - The African Queen down 48 places
- Highest ranked movies of my lifetime (last 30 years) - Schlinder's List #8
- # of SNL Cast Member Movies 1

AFI Top 10 of 10

For my first post. 2 years ago, AFI and CBS presented the 100 Years 100 Movies list. With this they listed the greatest movies of all time and the top 10 movies of all time in 10 different genres. Below I give you the top spot in all genres and a link to the actual list.

Animation - SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARFS (1937)
- Classic, first animated movie in color
- I wonder where Wall-E would place if done today...I say top 5 easy...Waaallll-E...Eeeeva

Fantasy - WIZARD OF OZ, THE (1939)
- Never really understood the alure of this one, but you can't deny the Technicolor pop
- The lunatic is on the grass

Gangster - GODFATHER, THE (1972)
- Can't argue with this too much...although Part II can make a strong case
- New gangster movies worth a peak...The Departed (or the better Hong Kong version Internal Affairs) and of course the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, II

Sci-Fi - 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY (1968)
- Never seen it...doubt I ever will
- Waalllll-E

Western - SEARCHERS, THE (1956)
- Does the Big Lebowski count as a western?
- What about No Country for Old Men?

Sports - RAGING BULL (1980)
- Perhaps Mr. de Niro finest work
- How the triumvirate of Sandler sports movies - Happy Gilmore, The Longest Yard, and the Water Boy - doesn't make it here is beyond me

Mystery - VERTIGO (1958)
- Never been a big mystery fan and from the looks of it, we've only made two good ones in the last 20 years

Romantic Comedy - CITY LIGHTS (1931)
- Next!
- Everyone...Jereme Lovelace loves this stuff.

Courtroom Drama - TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD (1963)
- Really? This is a genre? Why not then road trip comedy or mocumentary or terribly bad action movies by Brad Rattner? (nevermind I know why note the last one)

Epic - LAWRENCE OF ARABIA (1962)
- I am William Wallace and I will have my revenge on AFI voters

I wonder why they didn't rank Musicals or Play Adaptations or Action or any number of films as part of this Top 10 of 10? More of AFI's lists to come.

What Is This?

Hi Everyone,

If you asked where is the best place to live, you can go to several resources to find that information - Money Magazine, U.S. News and Report, Kiplingers, etc. What's the best school? Depends, Princeton Review will tell you Stanford, U.S. News says Harvard. Best place to eat...you get the picture.

I love reading these things...I also believe a lot of others like to read lists as well. Why do you think VH1 has an entire catalogue worth of best (fill in the blank).

What I want to do with this blog is congregrate some of the best, weirdest, funniest, worst, lists in one spot. In addition compile them into a manageable bunch so you can compare for yourself. In the process I hope to fill everyone's mind with sometimes important, rarefly useful, but always intriguing information.

As this list buids, I would love to hear from you and get your help in making this the Ultimate List Lister.

On with the Show,
Jaehl
